Position Summary

A full-time general surgeon to provide general surgical care in a community setting. Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital has a young, well-trained, and vibrant medical staff that is committed to first-rate patient care. OSMH has a broad complement of existing surgical services, including Urology, Plastic surgery, ENT, OBGYN, Orthopaedic surgery, Ophthalmology, and additional on-site general surgery specializations in MIS, Breast Oncoplastics, ERCP, Therapeutic Endoscopy, and Colorectal Surgery. Surgeons work closely with the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with well-established surgical oncology programs.

This is an excellent environment for a new or early career general surgeon, boasting fully equipped MIS and endoscopy suites, on-site interventional radiology, internal medicine support, a closed ICU, an established Acute Care Surgery service, and a support and collaborative group of colleagues.

The City of Orillia itself is in the heart of Ontario’s cottage country, nestled in between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching, with lots of waterfront properties and direct access to a full complement of summer lake and nature activities, winter skiing, sledding and excellent local restaurants.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

On-Call:
- Urgent surgical consultations and surgical management of emergency conditions. On call will be 1 in 5.

Elective:
- Operating room and endoscopy resources equitably distributed amongst all surgeons

In-Patient:
- Daily rounds on patients including facilitation of timely discharge
- Effective physician to physician communication and handover at all transitions from unit to unit
- Collegial cross coverage and handover of all surgery patients

Out-Patient:
- Outpatient clinics

Administrative and Quality:
- Participation in strategic planning and program development of General Surgery services
- Participation in ongoing quality improvement and safety activities related to nephrology care
- Participation in hospital committees pertaining to specialty and as required by the credentialed staff by-laws
- Efficient use of resources

Utilization:
- Utilization of OR time, outpatients clinics, endoscopy in an efficient and optimized manner

REMUNERATION:
- Fee for Service
- HOCC for on-call

Qualifications

Education:
- College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) unrestricted license that allows the physician to fulfil the requirements of this position.
- Fellowship in Surgery recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Experience:
- Previous work experience, fellowship training, or keen interest in breast surgery and oncoplastics preferred but not required
- New graduates welcome to apply
