Position Summary

The Internist hospitalist is hospital based and will primarily provide consultations to the Emergency department and to support family physicians, hospitalists and surgeons who are the Most Responsible Providers (MRP) for the majority of hospital inpatients. They may be MRP for some patients or involved in concurrent care based on clinical complexity of the patient. The Internist Hospitalist will work with the multidisciplinary team to provide care and services at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) in accordance with accepted and evolving standards of clinical practice. They will utilize excellent diagnostic and therapeutic skills for the assessment and management of a wide range of medical conditions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary:
The primary responsibility is for the provision of the highest quality of medical care, utilizing the resources of OSMH in a prudent manner, and working within their scope of training, experience and skill level.
The Internist Hospitalist will be responsible for:
• providing concurrent care when requested by a family physician or specialist based on complexity
• providing MRP care for designated patients based on complexity
• participating in the provision of 24/7 coverage with the other Internists
• participating in the multidisciplinary approach to efficient patient flow
• communicating effectively with other members of the care team and the other hospitalists in order to facilitate transfer of patient care
• ensuring that consultations are prompt, effective and well communicated to the team, patient and family
• actively participating as a preceptor for medical trainees to develop inpatient acute care skills.
• ensuring that case conferences for complex multi-morbid patients include primary care and receiving agencies.
• communicating discharge plans to the receiving community physician or nurse practitioner in a manner that optimizes continuity of care. (eg. discharge summaries will be dictated on the day of discharge)
• using the Electronic Medical Record to its full capacity, seeking additional training as required.
• consistently using available order sets electronically as appropriate.
• participating in education to support accurate and comprehensive coding practices.
• developing competency with Dragon Medical One voice transcription when available.


Availability:
• dedicate the work day to hospital work and be available for consultations in ED and on the wards
• be available for admissions, timely rounding and effective discharges for patients attend daily bullet rounds and huddles on units where assigned patients are admitted
• be readily available and accessible to patients, families and staff to create and continuously reassess the care plan together with the patient.

Utilization and Quality:
• Uses resources efficiently and works to achieve benchmarks in quality, access, turn around times, etc. as determined by the department, Medical Advisory Committee and hospital
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Chief of Medicine.

Qualifications

Licensure:
• College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) unrestricted license that allows the physician to fulfil the requirements of this position.

Education:
• Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
• ACLS

Experience:
• Previous experience in hospital based medicine preferred.

Competencies (CanMEDS Competency Framework):
Desired but not required:
• Interpret and report electrocardiograms
• Supervise cardiac stress tests
• Holter monitor interpretation an asset

• Demonstrate proficient and appropriate use of procedural skills, both diagnostic and
therapeutic,
• Seek appropriate consultation from other health professionals, recognizing the limits
of their expertise.

• Eligible for appointment to the Credentialed Staff of Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.
